Government of India extends their support to uplift the Investment and Tourism sector in Sri Lanka

Indian High Commissioner H.E. Mr. Gopal Bagley pledged to provide the fullest support of the Government of India to uplift the investment and tourism sector in Sri Lanka which has fallen with Covid -19 pandemic during the discussion held with Hon. Minister of Industrial Export, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation Mr. Prasanna Ranatunga on June 2 at the Ministry. He added that financial, technical and other necessary support will be provided in the near future.

The Indian High Commissioner expressed the willingness of Indian Businessmen to invest in Sri Lanka for food security, pharmaceuticals, agricultural products and fuel refining. He also agreed to implement a joint investment program between the two countries after the Covid -19 pandemic. Further, they have exchanged their views on the establishment of a new business center to empower the startups and entrepreneurs in Jaffna with the RS.250 Mn grant of the Indian Government. Hon. Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that the work on this project would be completed soon.

The two sides also discussed the development activities of the Palali Airport in Jaffna. The Government of India has provided Rs 300 million for the development of the Palali Airport.

In addition, they have further discussed on the project of building 144 new houses in pilgrims of Madu with the assistance of Rs.300 million provided by the Government of India for the local and foreign tourists. H.E. Bagley also discussed with the Minister on opening of the Katunayake Airport and the arrival of tourists.

Secretary to the Ministry of Industrial Export and Investment Promotion Mr. Mapa Pathirana and Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation Mr. S. Hettiarachchi were also present at the occasion.
